Run, and Not be Weary

guy down

I ran my third Marathon today. I ran another one this year after a great experience a year ago at the same event. A year ago, I was as well prepared as I could have been, and even ended up finishinig with a little gas left in my tank. My legs were tired to be sure, but I had enough left to accelerate through the finish line, and finish well ahead of where I expected to be. What a difference a year makes.

This year, I was well prepared-ish. I had run plenty, but hadn’t been able to get the long training runs in like I had in past years. The longest training run that I did complete was just 14 miles. I am learning, the hard way, that this might not cut it.

As much as I omitted the longer training sessions, and hadn’t really prepared my legs for 26.2 miles, that wasnt the main problem. The biggest, most obvious, most glaring mistake I made this year was in the nutrition department. I thought I had prepared well enough. I thought I had a good plan, but I didn’t. I thought that rather than going with the tried and true plans presented by experts, experienced runners, and people who understand exercise physiology, I would go with the Colby plan instead.

My brilliant plan consisted of nutrition powder mixes that I had been using on my not so long training runs. My foolproof plan consisted of said powder mixes of which I had neglected to even read the ingredients on the label. My innovative plan was a disaster. Lets just say we could probably rename it the “original marathon nutrition plan”. It would probably be the most accurate considering that the dude that supposedly ran the original marathon died after he “finished”.

After feeling great for about 18, or 19 miles, I suddenly realized upon gazing at my internal energy gas tank, that it was completely empty. Not like almost empty, or dinging that little warning light that reminds us to refuel soon empty, but sputtering, and spattering, and metal grinding, and engine stopping empty. I was toast.

That was no bueno. I was 7 or 8 miles short of the finish line, with only a few more water stations between where I was, and the promised land. I was in trouble. I was hoping for one of those stations to have some of those sugary goo things, or chews, or pizza, or even cooked vegetables, I was that empty. But, as luck would have it, none of the next few did. It was water, gatorade, or some tasty advil.

I was in survival mode. My legs felt more like the rusty hinges on the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz than something that would carry me the next several miles. The reason? I really was out of gas. The powder mixes that were my main source of energy had exactly 0 calories each. Even though I had mixed 3 of them over the race, if you do the math, that’s 0 calories in, and about 3500 calories out during that almost 4 hour run. No wonder I felt so awesome.

With only about 2 and half miles left, I did run past some people handing out little honey sticks, that I promptly grabbed, and voraciously tried to suck out the 4 drops of honey. I think I may have aspirated some in my lungs I was in such a hurry. I also stole a piece of banana bread from one of the volunteer tables that was off limits. But, at that point, I was more like gollum devouring a raw fish after 7 days without food, than an actual runner.

Even with the honey, and the bread, my tank was beyond empty, it was on negative empty, if there is such a thing. It would take more than some honey drops and a stolen piece of bread to get me back to normal. The last 8 miles had been the definition of enduring to the end.

But, apparently, this is just the way that I learn best. The hard way. I had learned that nutrition was important, I had even worried about it, and planned it out meticulously in the past, but not today. I had taken it for granted. I had relied upon my own planning, and didn’t give enough thought or attention to it. In my prideful mind, I had thought, “Ive done this before, no big deal” even though, before, I had taken much better care in being really prepared by being well nourished.

As with all of the things I learn, there are parallels, and types, and comparisons that cover all aspects of my life. Truth is truth, and principles are principles. Being well nourished during a race is essential to helping me endure for the entire duration. This is as true for my physical body as it is for my spiritual side.

In the Book of Mormon we learn about the real race we are all running, and how we need help finishing. This real race consists of all of us winding our way back home to God. This race begins with our committment to run! That comittment to run is our baptism. What follows that committment is a life full of hills, long stretches without water, and others seemingly more expert at running than we are. But, the instructions on how to finish this more important race, are right at our fingertips….

“And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.”
-Moroni 6:4

“Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.”
-2 Nephi 31:20

No matter our race, we need nutrition and nourishment. Whether it be enduring a marathon, or in real life. In a physical race, we need food, or energy to keep us going. In our spiritual races, we need spiritual energy that comes from beign nourished by the word of God, and feasting upon them.

We can’t always wait until our tank is empty before we even start to think about refilling it. The effect of neglecting physical or spiritual nutrition is the same. We run out of gas. We simply cannot expect to finish the way we want to, in either race, unless we stop thinking that our own plan is best. We have to give up thinking that our own plan is foolproof, or that any success we have had in the past was because of our own strength. The simple truth of the matter is that we will always finish best when we rely solely on the One true Expert- the “Author and Finisher of our faith”

The Girl I See Today

Sophie

My Sophie girl is turning eight!
Excitement’s in your eyes!
Your birthday’s come, you couldn’t wait,
To finally be baptized!

A constant smile across your face,
And plan for this whole day,
To be a special birthday race
For you, in just your way.

And even though the gifts you get,
Can bring some happiness,
They don’t compare, you won’t forget
Your heart swell in your chest!

As we descend in water clear,
in clothes so clean and white,
we’ll feel the Holy Spirit near,
And feel the Savior’s light.

You’ll promise with your little heart,
to His, so big and pure,
that you will follow, do your part,
And with His help, endure.

For even He, a perfect Man,
Lay down in water’s grave,
And thus fulfilling God’s command,
To willingly obey.

Then both together, we will stand,
in water clear and true,
And to the square I’ll raise my hand,
As Spirit fills the room.

And then I’ll hold you close to me,
Immersing down below,
And rise above, now pure and clean
And light as falling snow,

And then, the part I love the most,
my hands upon your head,
Confirming Gift of Holy Ghost,
God’s blessing will be said

And as you seek to use this gift,
Your heart will fill with love,
From Holy Ghost, our friend that lifts,
With strength sent from above.

And then you’ll grow up, time will fly!
but in my heart you’ll stay,
My little girl, in daddy’s eyes,
the one I see today.

I Love you Sophia!

-Daddy

Death by Water

14 Thursday May 2015

A couple of weeks ago I had the wonderful privilege of speaking at a baptism for my nephew.  He is awesome and I love him.  I also love his parents.  I only had a few minutes to speak there, and I tried to convey the thoughts that I had into those few precious moments because nobody except me wanted to hear a 25-minute talk on baptism.  So, in an effort to more fully process the thoughts I had leading up to that night, I have written them down here.  I thought about sending this letter to my brother (and obviously his son) as an email or personal letter, but decided on posting it here in the hopes that it will be of some assistance to someone somewhere – not to mention the hope that someday Tyler will read it and remember that special day.  What follows then, is the non-readers digest version of a baptism story addressed as a letter to an 8 year old boy (on his actual 8th birthday):

Dear Tyler,

Today something awesome gets to take place.  You get to have a birthday.  Not the normal kind of birthday (the mommy birth) – because you’ve already had a bunch of those.  You get to have a heavenly birthday too.  And we all know that the best part of having a birthday is getting presents.

Now, tonight, your amazing dad gets to walk down into the water and look up at you.  In that instant, as he looks up into your smiling face, all 8 of the incredibly long and incredibly short years of your life will flash before his eyes as he sees you standing there.  His heart will burn.  He will hold his hand out to gently invite you into the water with him.  As you slowly step down into the water, he will wonder if he’s taught you well enough.  He will wonder if he explained exactly what to expect.  He no doubt has practiced the technique with you in the pool or at home in preparation for this day.  He probably even showed you exactly how and where he will hold you, how to bend your knees, how to hold your breath, and to close your eyes.  More than once he reassured you that everything will be fine and that he will be right there with you the whole time.  He will feel love and your mother will feel love because they know how important tonight is.

As you stand there in the water, you may get a bit nervous.  The long awaited time of your baptism is so close now. You’ve thought about it, talked about it, planned for it, and dreamed about it, but now that you are standing in the water, you may be just a bit unsure how this is all going to happen.  Then your dad will grab your left arm and put it into his.  Then, he will position your right arm in just the right place so that you can plug your nose.  After your dad speaks some amazing words, you will – If you pay attention – notice that his hands are placed both in front of your chest leading you and behind your back supporting you.  You will need this support because despite your nerves, he is going to bury you.

Your dad is going to bury you in the water. That means that the water will be completely covering you.  Every single bit of you.  There won’t even be a little piece of you that is allowed to breathe (two people will make sure of that!).  You are left to trust your father, after all, he is the one that invited you down into the water and assured you that this would be for your own good.

Next, something amazing will happen while you are buried in that water.  You, little man – get to die.

Death.  A lot of people think it’s the end – but we know a secret, we know that death is only the beginning – or at least the beginning of something much better.  Because, during your death, the short time that you are completely buried in the water, your awesome dad will still be holding on to you – with both hands, and I promise you, he will not let go.  In fact, after what may seem like a long time, he will pull you right back up from that watery grave, and you will be a whole new man.

You may not notice it tonight, and you may not ever even think about it in the future, but I can promise you that there isn’t a single person in the room tonight that won’t have their eyes on you when you come out of that water – and you will look glorious to them.  You will be a shining light of happiness, love, and innocence that makes everyone remember something and somewhere better.

Now, I want you to think of another father and son who had a very similar experience.  Think of a father who talked about, practiced, and explained this same type of death to his son.  The son, without having experienced baptism was a little nervous when the time came to walk down into the water. In fact, this son became “sore amazed” at the thought of being completely under all that deep, heavy, painful water.

Yet, just like you, he trusted his father, and knew that when his father would bury him under that water – he would die.

But, this son also knew that his father would still be holding on with both hands, leading him and supporting him and that after just enough time being dead, he would pull him right back up and he would be resurrected.

And, just like you tonight, when that father pulled that son up out of the water where he died, there were lots of eyes that were looking right at him, and he was glorious.  He was (and still is) a shining light of love, happiness, joy, and perfection.  He is Jesus Christ and he invites us all to keep looking at him, to keep our eyes on him, and to keep watching him and doing all the things that he does.

That father and that son are the perfect examples for all of us, and you little man, get to show them that you love them by following their example and getting baptized.  I am so happy for you and for your family.

I know that you are making the right choice, and that Jesus Christ is real.  I know that the scriptures are true, and that if we read them we will be happy.

Love,

Uncle Tyson
